Description
Cook Hill is a 3,015' summit in the Columbia Gorge east of Dog Mountain. The true summit lies on a ridge of scraggly Douglas-firs, but vistas and wildflowers abound on the extensive summit meadow on the west side of the ridge line. Grass widow, prairie violet, prairie star, larkspur, balsamroot, and sedge light up the meadow in the spring. Get views to Dog Mountain, Mount Defiance, and Mount Hood.
The summit meadow of Cook Hill was heavily grazed until the year 2000. Geologically, Cook Hill is part of an anticlinal fold in the Columbia River Basalts. The hill and the small settlement of Cook below are named after Charles A. Cook, an early homesteader here.
