Description
Wapiki Lake is a deep sub-alpine lake in Indian Heaven Wilderness. It is located in an ancient volcanic crater, and nearby Lemei Rock is all that remains of this long-extinct volcano. The lake is reached by a short 0.3 mile spur trail (#34A) from Lemei Rock trail #34. Surrounding forests abound with huckleberries in late summer and early fall.
Between 30,000 and 20,000 years ago, lava flows spewed out of the crater here and flowed down into the Trout Lake Valley and then descended the White Salmon River past Husum. The numerous lava tubes and formations in those areas are a result of these flows.
From the south shore of the lake you can access several small tarns and Little Lake Wapiki. A use trail leads up a rocky chute to a bench with tarns and heather meadows below Lemei Rock.
