Description
Alder Springs, about 1 1/4 miles from the Alder Springs Trailhead, is a collection of gushing springs on or near a lush grassy bench in a bend of Whychus Creek. While a couple of the springs are on the east side of the creek up box canyons, those that hikers most often visit are right in the middle of this bench. The creek and springs are shaded by willow, white alder, and ponderosa pines. The creek cuts below high canyon walls here and there are views up to rock formations on the rim above.
There are several campsites in the vicinity. Making a fire is forbidden although it is obvious that regulation is routinely ignored. The campsites are popular on weekends, so get in early if you are hoping to grab a space. There are a couple of other sites about half a mile down the creek and more spaces past the Whychus Creek-Deschutes River Confluence.
