Description
Badger Butte rises above Badger Lake as one of the highest prominences in the area. It once had a lookout, apparently in a tree, and the old telephone wire can still be seen. The large summit area is heavily forested, mainly with mountain hemlock. An open area, carpeted with pinemat manzanita, is on the southeast corner of the summit area. The best views from here are to the south all the way down the Cascade spine to the Three Sisters and Broken Top. Walk around to the north and you will see Mount Hood rising above Gunsight Butte with part of Badger Lake visible below.
The northwest slope drops steeply with a lot of scree to Badger Lake. The hike to the top of the butte is a bushwhack although you may encounter sections of the old lookout access road. Hike up from the site of the Valley View Cabin Site on the 140 spur, or from FR 4860 near the junction of the Boulder Lake and Badger Creek Trails.
