Description
Battery Russell is a fortification in the complex of defenses at the mouth of the Columbia River. It is named after a Union Army major general killed in the Civil war, but who also served at Fort Yamhill in Oregon. The fort was completed in 1904 and decommissioned in 1944. It was serviced by two 10-inch disappearing rifles. During World War II, a Japanese submarine lobbed shells near Battery Russell, causing no damage. This was the first foreign attack on U.S. soil since the War of 1812.
