Big Tree

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

The Big Tree (bobcat)

Description

The Big Tree is a 13-foot diameter Douglas-fir in the Oregon Caves National Monument. It could be 600-1,000 years old and its size is attributable to the lush environs of the Panther Creek drainage and Waterfelt Spring, which is just up the slope. The tree's height has been whittled down over the centuries by lightning strikes and a raised wood platform around the base now protects compaction of the soil. As the park brochure points out, the "lichen line" a few feet above the base denotes the snow depth during a normal winter.
