Description

Butte Camp, traditionally known as Lower Butte Camp, sits on a lovely bench nestled below the two humps of Butte Camp Dome. Amongst the conifers there are several spacious campsites, used more often in the past than at present as this space was the primary base camp for a southern ascent of the pre-1980 Mount Saint Helens. The eastern edge of the bench is a burbling stream, becoming part of the Butte Camp Trail in sections, and issuing all year from a copious spring on the otherwise dry slopes. False hellebore, monkey flower, linanthus, rushes, and Sitka alder complement the scattered conifers.

Note that mosquitoes can be rather pestilential here into August and biting flies are a minor nuisance thereafter.
