Cape Horn

Description

Cape Horn is the first large prominence on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge. The summit here is known as Biddle Butte or Mount Zion. "Cape Horn" refers to the vertical cliffs below on the Columbia River. These are Grande Ronde basalts, one of the older Columbia River Basalt flows at 17 million to 15.6 million years before the present. Biddle Butte is a Boring volcano that is less than a million years ago. The shipping channel here runs very close to the cliffs, as there are sand deposits and a rock bar between Phoca Rock and Sand Island.
