Description
Cigar Rock is a 200-foot column of basalt that leans away from the ramparts of Cape Horn's sheer cliffs. This feature, made famous by early Gorge photographer Carleton Watkins, is usually only seen from the water level. It was an early navigational marker along with nearby "Lone Rock", (now called Phoca Rock) for riverboat traffic in the late 1800s. Now this close-up view of Cigar Rock is available to hikers along the lower cliffs of Cape Horn.
