Driving Directions
Note: This trailhead is now closed. The Salmonberry Trail Intergovernmental Agency and the Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad have declared the route through the Salmonberry Canyon "dangerous and closed to the public." No Trespassing signs have been posted at the east and west ends of the canyon. You can still access the Salmonberry Canyon by hiking down the North Fork Salmonberry Road or Beaver Slide Road, but you can't hike the route of the railroad. Plans are being considered to construct a hiking/biking trail through the canyon with the involvement of Oregon State Parks, but these are in the exploratory stages only.
From the junction of Highway 26 and Highway 6, continue along 26 for 16.0 miles to Timber Junction.
Turn left here for Timber and drive 3.0 miles into the hamlet of Timber.
Turn right onto N.W. Cochran Road, which becomes gravel. Drive 3.9 miles, keeping straight past Reeher’s Camp (after 2.4 miles) to a junction after a creek crossing.
Keep right here and drive 1.8 miles to another junction.
Keep right and continue 1.4 miles to the junction with the Giveout Grade.
Stay left here and, in a few yards, reach a five-way junction.
Take the second road on the left and drive 0.2 miles down through a rusty open gate to the railroad. Park to the right of the railroad alongside the maintenance track.
Alternative route:
If the direct and shorter route described above is out, you will have to take the longer route described below:
Drive west from Portland on Highway 26 for about 40 miles. Just west of milepost 32, turn left on to Salmonberry Road. Salmonberry Road is pretty well hidden when traveling west. The forest roads in this area are a maze, but recent signage has helped a lot. Set your trip meter to 0 and follow the instructions below.
Step | Odometer Reading | Description |
---|---|---|
1 | 0.0 | Reset Odometer at intersection of highway 26 and Salmonberry Road. Go south on Salmonberry Road. |
2 | 1.2 | Turn left on Section 10 Road. |
3 | 3.3 | Turn left on Wheeler Road. |
4 | 3.4 | Head kind of straight and kind of right on "Firelane Road 2 Rd" |
5 | 3.8 | Keep left on Firelane Road 2 at the junction with Ellis Rd |
6 | 5.4 | There's a rockpit here. Turn right on to an unsigned road. There's a tree with bright orange paint reading "Hogon" |
7 | 5.7 | Follow the road as it hooks to the left around a point |
8 | 8.6 | Turn right at an unsigned "T" in a large clearcut filled with Scotch Broom |
9 | 8.7 | Pass a couple of side roads and park near the train tracks. |
