Driving Directions

Drive Interstate 84 east from Portland until you reach Baker City.

Take Exit 302 and head east on Highway 86 for about 50 miles.

Turn onto Highway 12 (Cornucopia Highway) following signs for the town of Halfway. Drive through the town and keep on the main road, which eventually leaves the populated valley and turns to gravel as it heads towards the ghost town of Cornucopia.

At Cornucopia watch for a road on the right which goes up to the Cornucopia Lodge. Turn right on this road, then stay left at a fork. (If you find yourself at the lodge turn around and go back to the fork.)

Follow the road to an area with a horse corral and small outbuildings. You can park off the side of the road just before reaching the corral, or you can drive past the corral and park at a turnaround area just beyond. As of 2013 there were no signs marking the trailhead.

Fees / Regulations

  • Area around the trailhead is private land; keep to the trails
  • Share trail with stock
  • When camping at Pine Lakes make sure you are camped 100 feet from the lakeshore. Group size is limited to 12 or less.
