Description
This series of meadows forms the headwaters of Cot Creek. There are two seasonal lakes above the main meadow and lake, the latter usually keeping an expanse of open water all year. Mosquitoes abound here spring through the summer, so if you wish to avoid these pests, come in the fall. However, the best wildflower displays are at the height of mosquito season and continue through the summer.
Meadow blooms to look for are white bog orchid, marsh-marigold, long-stalked clover, tall mountain mertensia, white false hellebore, bog paintbrush, monkey flower, mountain spiraea, and marsh violet, among many others. There are a few large old growth mountain hemlocks and noble firs in the vicinity of the lake.
The Cottonwood Meadows Trail is little used below the meadows and part of it has disappeared in clearcuts.
