Description
The Devils Gardens are the most spectacular alpine area you can easily get to on Mount Adams. The meadows only support low, hardy alpine plants because of the high elevation. The rock gardens are other wordly. The views to Mount Rainier and the Goat Rocks are magnificent.
You're many miles from the nearest trailhead, so there won't be many other people up here.
Beware the two branches of the Muddy Fork you have to cross between Foggy Flat and the Devils Gardens. They are difficult to cross during heavy snow melt or rain, and are worse in the afternoon than the morning because of increased snow melt.
You can walk up another mile, off trail, beyond the high point of the High Line Trail. Just try to avoid trampling the few plants. Keep an eye where you came from so you don't get lost. Look for mountain goats, which are common. You can walk all the way up to the base of a glacier (if it hasn't melted yet - global warming).
It's illegal to enter the Yakama Reservation without a permit that fits the specific dates of their annual open window for the general public.
