Description
This bridge spans a portion of Eagle Creek a short distance from the Eagle Creek Day Use Trailhead. It allows hikers to continue on Gorge Trail #400 which also connects to the Wauna Viewpoint Trail and the Tanner Creek Trail. It also accesses the short Shady Glen Trail just across the creek. The bridge is a popular overhead viewing spot for observing spawning coho salmon in the fall.
This is the fourth bridge at this location. The first was built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1936, a second bridge was constructed to replace the first that had washed away. The second bridge did a lot better, lasting until it too washed away in 1997. A suspension bridge was built in 2000, but that one was seriously damaged in the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire when a cable snapped and the whole bridge warped. The latest bridge was installed in 2020.
