American Vetch is a common vine west of the Cascades. It has narrow alternating leaves and purple flowers.

Tips on identifying Lupine

8-10 leaflets, 2-3 flowers in each cluster Lentil Vetch Vicia tetrasperma
8-12 leaflets, 4-10 flowers in each cluster American Vetch Vicia americana
10-14 leaflets, 1-3 flowers in each cluster Garden Vetch Vicia sativa
12-18 leaflets, 9 or more flowers in each cluster, usually one-sided flower cluster Hairy Vetch Vicia villosa
14-18 narrow leaflets, 3-8 white flowers in each cluster Tiny Vetch Vicia hirsuta
19-29 leaflets, 7-20 flowers in each cluster Black Vetch Vicia nigricans
