Description
Goat Marsh Lake is a shallow lake formed only about 400 years ago when pyroclastic flows from Mount Saint Helens dammed Coldspring Creek. The latter essentially disappears into the substrate of the wetland here, which is a mixture of two areas of open water and sedge-choked swampland. Skeletal snags testify to an active beaver colony, whose dams have raised the water level and killed dry land plants.
The sheltered area between the lake and Goat Mountain is home to some of the world's largest noble firs and the groves are part of a scientific research area.
