Fees and Regulations

  • No pass currently required to park here.
  • Reservations are required to stay at the lookout; see Recreation.gov

Driving Directions

Drive I-5 south through Salem and take Exit 253 for Highway 22, Detroit Lake, and Bend. After making the exit, turn left onto Highway 22.

Drive 49.4 miles to Detroit and turn left onto FR 46 for Breitenbush, Elk Lake, and Olallie Lake.

Drive 4.4 miles and make a left onto paved FR 4696.

Go 0.8 miles and turn left onto gravel FR 4697, signposted HIGH CLEARANCE ONLY.

Wind up for 4.7 miles on this potholed road to a Y-junction and turn right on Spur 451.

After 0.1 mile you will see the road/trail to Gold Butte - FR 455 - on your right. Park here. It is a 1.6 mile hike to the summit with 800 feet elevation gain.

Other Notes

This road is subject to severe rutting and drainage problems. A 4-wheel drive is recommended, but I have driven my Toyota Corolla here several times with no problems.
