Description
Grassy Knoll is a high meadow and site of a former lookout. The lookout no longer exists, but the early summer wildflower displays and the views remain. In prime season, around the first week in July, the meadow is blooming with balsam root, paintbrush, lupine, larkspur, columbine, Indian-parsnip and many more. In late spring, the daffodils planted by lookout staff decorate the open knoll. Views extend from Mount Hood and Mount Defiance to Mount Adams.
The lookout was first established in 1934. It was demolished by winds in 1952 and materials were flown in to replace it in June, 1953. It was finally decommissioned in the late 1960s.
