Description
Leaf Hill is a small mound of broken shale in a remote section of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The hill is the source of tens of thousands of fossil leaves and seeds. A display case shows some of the fossils collected here, including leaf impressions of the dawn redwood (Metasequoia), elm, oak, and hornbeam and the seeds of maple and pine. Ralph W. Chaney, a University of California paleobotanist collected over 20,000 small specimens here in 1923!
Fossil collecting is restricted to approved scientific groups, and the hill is protected by a pole rail fence.
