Description
The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center at Cape Disappointment is a museum of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, but also details the story of Civil War era Fort Canby and the maritime history of the dreaded Columbia Bar. There is an admission charge to view the exhibits in the Center. Clifftop views from the front of the Center are free.
Below the modern Interpretive Center, various ruins and interpretive signs, as well as the solidly built Battery Harvey Allen, exhibit Fort Canby’s purpose. The structures date to the time of the Civil War and were built at the same time as the original fortifications at Fort Stevens and Fort Columbia. Fort Canby was in active military use from 1863 to 1948.
