Merten Mill

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Old boiler used at the Merten Mill (cfm)
Sawmill Falls (Cascada de los Ninos), Little North Santiam River (bobcat)

Description

Merten Mill, about two miles from the Opal Creek Trailhead on your way to Jawbone Flats, was constructed in 1943 and operated for only a short time because the access road proved too difficult to navigate for large trucks. Poking around a bit here will reward you with views of an old steam boiler, a smelter, drive wheels, and various other artifacts of mid-20th century lumber production. The steam engine was recycled from the battleship U.S.S. Oregon. Follow a footpath behind the only remaining building, a shed or garage, towards the river to view the 30-foot Cascada de los Ninos (aka Sawmill Falls).
