Description
Mitchell Spur is a rocky promontory in the eastern Columbia River Gorge. The famed Mitchell Point Tunnel on the Historic Columbia River Highway, the "Tunnel of Many Vistas," was actually bored through Mitchell Spur.
Like Mitchell Point, Mitchell Spur is a formation of the Grand Ronde member of the Columbia River Basalts tilted at approximately 30 degrees. To Native Americans, the prominence was known as Little Storm King. The historic wagon road/automobile route of the Mitchell Point Grade ran over the saddle between Mitchell Point and Mitchell Spur before the construction of the Mitchell Point Tunnel in 1915.
