Description

Mount Bachelor is a young 15,000 year-old volcano, first forming as a shield volcano. More explosive activity up to 8,000 years ago resulted in the more conical shape of the stratovolcano you see today. Surface deposits of pyroclastic material on Mt. Bachelor are a result of Mt. Mazama's eruption (See Crater Lake) about 7,000 years ago.

A trail leads up Mt. Bachelor on the north side. The ski resort here is one of the largest such operations in the Pacific Northwest and offers runs with drops of over 3,300 feet.

The mountain was formerly known as Bachelor Butte.
