Description
This stunning viewpoint overlooks the deep forested valley of the Oak Grove Fork to the main course of the Clackamas River. Views extend south to Mount Jefferson and the Three Sisters. Clambering about the promontory, you can get an excellent view north to Wolf Peak, High Rock, Mount Hood, and the Washington Cascades as fas as Mount Rainier.
Look for bright pink rock penstemon blooming here in mid-summer. Washington lilies, turtle head, bleeding heart, red mountain heather, and arrow-leaf groundsel also bloom in the vicinity.
Formerly named Oak Grove Mountain, the prominence was renamed in honor of Roy Mitchell, who died fighting a forest fire in 1919. The actual summit of Mt. Mitchell is closer to the Rimrock Trail as it approaches its descent to meet the Cottonwood Meadows Trail.
