Description

The Peter Iredale, named after the Liverpool-based owner of a shipping fleet, was a steel-hulled barque that sailed north from Mexico for Portland and ran aground on October 25th, 1906. Captain Lawrence took bearings from the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse for the mouth of the Columbia, known as the "Graveyard of the Pacific", but a storm drove the ship ashore. There was some hope for refloating the Peter Iredale, but weather conditions buried the hull in the sand and the ship was sold for scrap. Now only the rusted bow and ribs remain, a popular attraction in Fort Stevens State Park.
