Ponytail Falls

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Description

Ponytail Falls (sometimes called Upper Horsetail Falls) is on Horsetail Creek just above Horsetail Falls. Like nearby Oneonta Falls and many of the falls in Silver Falls State Park, Ponytail Falls displays the results of centuries of geology. First a basalt lava flow buried a softer layer of rock and soil. Then water and winter ice removed the softer material below, creating a cavern of sorts. The Horsetail Falls Trail #438, here also the Gorge Trail #400, runs behind the falls in the hollowed out area.
