Description
The original Dog Mountain Trail was built to service a fire lookout at this location. Today, nothing remains of the lookout other than a worn piece of concrete foundation. The lookout cabins, the first one constructed in 1931 with a new L-4 cab put up in 1953, were actually manned by staff from the Mt. Hood National Forest. The reason for the choice is clear as the views of the Columbia River and the Oregon side of the Gorge remain expansive. The building was decommissioned in 1967.
Two trails lead upward from here. The Dog Mountain Trail heads straight north into the summit meadows that flower in May. The Dog Mountain Summit Loop Trail heads farther east, working its way to the summit up the timbered east side.
