Description
There are three clifftop viewpoints on a brushy little loop off the Cape Horn Trail. This viewpoint is the westernmost and is directly above the west portal of Tunnel 1 on the BNSF Railroad. The tunnel, at 2,382 feet the longest in the Gorge, was part of James Hill's Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway, which began service in 1908.
This is also a great place to watch tugboats shoving barges up and down the river. In between trains and boats, you can admire views of the Columbia River, Rooster Rock and Latourell Falls.
Take care on this side trail, and don't do it if you have a dog or a child. The margin for error is slim and a misstep is fatal.
