Description

Red Hill is a high point on Vista Ridge north of Mount Hood. It gets its name from the red volcanic cinders that blanket the top.

There's currently no trail to the top of Red Hill, but it's a fairly easy bushwack. This add-on hike starts from the restored Old Vista Ridge Trail. At a point about 2/10 west of the the Rockpile Junction, you'll head north from a meadow. The route is up is currently flagged, but flags can be transient. You'll head north and then hook to the west. The entire route is only about 3/10 of a mile.

The cinders on Red Hill are easily marked and take a while to heal. In the summer of 2007 an off road vehicle marred the surface. Hopefully nature will be able to erase the marks.

This area is currently part of a couple of conflicting management proposals. It's part of the proposed extension to the Mount Hood Wilderness, which would make it off-limits to motorized vehicles. It's also part of a proposal for an area that will dedicated and improved for off-road vehicles.
