Description
A short spit encloses the large coastal estuary of Sand Lake. The forested section of this spit has a network of trails (See the Sitka Sedge Loop Hike). Across the estuary mouth to the north, you may see ORVs buzzing along the beach in the Sand Lake Recreation Area; the imposing headland of Cape Lookout juts into the Pacific. In the lagoon is low, forested Whalen Island, which boasts a short nature trail (the Whalen Island Loop Hike). The estuary, one of the most pristine on the Oregon Coast, becomes a vast expanse of sand banks and mud flats at low tide.
