Description
Isolated Thorp Creek Meadows lie nestled below the two highest ridges in the Wallowa Mountains. Looming up to the east is the Hurwal Divide, whose dark shale connects to the lighter marbles of the Sacajawea Peak - Matterhorn ridge. You will find a couple of established campsites along the use trail through the four major meadows. More secluded (and little-used) sites can be found in the trees.
Thorp Creek itself is a reliable source of drinking water. There is also a large spring at the head of the meadow area. Wildflowers abound in the meadows in the summer; a perimeter of subalpine fir, whitebark pine, and lodgepole pine skirts the lower slopes of the high ridges. Upper slopes are composed of fell fields, shale scree, or solid walls of marble.
