Driving Directions
There are many options for getting here depending on where you live. These directions are from downtown Portland.
Drive I-5 south to Exit 294 for Highway 99W, Tigard and Newberg.
Merge with Highway 99W/Barbur Boulevard, drive 6.5 miles through Tigard and cross the Tualatin River.
Just past MP 14 (1.7 miles after the Tualatin River Bridge on 99W), turn right into the refuge and drive 0.2 miles to the gravel parking area.
A trailhead off of Roy Rogers Road is an alternative during late spring/summer (May 1st to September 30th) when the Chicken Creek Loop Hike is open:
Alternatives to Driving
- Tri-met Bus #93 and Tri-met Bus #94 stop at the refuge.
Other Notes
- No pets, no jogging, no cycling
- There are three parking spots specifically designated for hybrid vehicles.
- The refuge gates are open from dawn to dusk.
- The Wildlife Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 - 4:00.
- There are restrooms, picnic tables, a children's play area, a gift shop, and brochures available.
- The Nature Trail is open all year; other trails (on service roads) are open May 1st through September 30th.
- The observation blind is free, but you need to make a reservation to use it: Call 503 625-5944.
- A birding festival is held at the Atfalat'i Unit on several days around the middle of May
