Vernonia Lake

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Alder reflections in Vernonia Lake (bobcat)

Description

Vernonia Lake is now a popular recreation area for walkers, boaters, fishermen, but it was created to serve as the mill pond for the Oregon-American Lumber Company. The mill here operated from 1924 to the mid-1950s. The only significant remaining structure is the shell of the fuel bunker on the west side of the lake. Near here is a log slip. The Nehalem River runs just south of the lake. Various species of waterfowl ply the lake's waters, especially from mid-fall through mid-spring, so bring binoculars.

There's a walk-in campground on the lake's east side and interpretive signs detailing the history of the lumber mill at the Vernonia Lake Trailhead. The lake is a very popular trout fishing destination.
