Description
This historic lighthouse, constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1871 - 1873, stands at the tip of the rugged basalt peninsula of Yaquina Head. From this point, you can view seabirds on Colony Rock, seals and sealions in the swells below, and gray whales during their migration periods.
The lighthouse, at 90+ feet, is the tallest on the Oregon Coast. Visitors can take tours up the spiral staircase to the original 1868 Fresnel lens that is visible from 20 miles out at sea. Other buildings in the area, including the keeper's house, were demolished in the 1980s.
