Dog Mountain-Dog Mountain Summit Loop Upper Trail Junction

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Looking into the sun on the old Cascade Crest Trail (Steve Hart)
A better look at the faded sign (Steve Hart)

Description

The "old" Dog Mountain Trail was once part of the Cascade Crest Trail, a precursor to today's Pacific Crest Trail. In those days, through hikers had to slog up about 2800 feet of switchbacks to reach near the summit of Dog Mountain. Ironically, the trail didn't actually reach the true summit of the mountain. Today's "Summit Loop Trail" fixes that problem and creates a couple of alternative loops near the summit.
