Multnomah County Central Library

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

The Multnomah County Central Library on 10th Avenue, Portland (bobcat)

Description

While Multnomah County's first library was established in 1864, the building at 801 SW 10th Avenue was opened in 1913 under the direction of Head Librarian Mary Frances Isom. It was designed by A.E. Doyle and cost about $480,000 to construct. Portland declined donations from Andrew Carnegie and instead financed the building through a two-year public tax. The three-story Georgian-style structure, now on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as the Central Library for the Multnomah County Library System. The exterior of the building is faced with sandstone while a wide marble staircase is a dominant feature of the interior. In the 1990s, the library underwent a major structural renovation. In addition to 17 miles of shelf space, the library includes a periodical reading room, computers for public use, and a gift shop/café.
