South Mattieu Lake

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

South Mattieu Lake, North Sister in the background (Jerry Adams)

Description

South Mattieu Lake is a large pond 2.8 miles south of McKenzie Pass. It is surrounded by alpine rocks with a few sparse trees.

It is less crowded than North Mattieu Lake, but there are fewer campsites, which are very exposed if the weather is bad. Beyond here, the trails are much less crowded. The terrain is sparsely vegetated with plenty of flat places if you wanted to find a campsite away from the lake.

There is no inlet or outlet stream.
