Fees and Regulations

  • Outhouse; self-issued wilderness permit
  • * Northwest Forest Pass (or America the Beautiful Pass) required at the trailhead
  • Central Cascades Wilderness Permit required: $6 overnight permit; $1 per person day use (June 15th - October 15th)

Driving Directions

Take Exit 253 off Interstate 5 in Salem.

Drive 60 miles east on North Santiam Highway 22.

Between mileposts 60 and 61 (10 miles beyond Detroit), turn left on Whitewater Road 2243.

This gravel road forks in about 100 yards: keep right.

Follow this road 7.5 miles to where it dead-ends at a large parking area. There is an outhouse and self-service wilderness register station.

Other Notes

The last 7.5 miles is a forested gravel road. It is good enough for passenger cars, but the first half mile or so has several potholes - drive slowly.
